The Upper Delaware Scenic Byway, New York State Route 97, traverses the western borders of Orange, Sullivan and Delaware Counties, New York along a 70 mile stretch of the Delaware River. This unique highway connects the rafting and bluestone village of Hancock in Delaware County to the railroad city of Port Jervis in Orange County.
On scenic Route 97 and its various
side-roads, you’ll find county
eateries, art galleries, museums, theaters, antique shops and general stores;
all surrounded by undulating hills, long valley vistas and rock cut landscapes.
Motorcycle magazines cite Route 97 as being one of the best riding roads in
the Northeast Region, and portions of Route 97 are
designated as Bike Route
17 for bicycling enthusiasts. the nationally-renowned Upper Delaware Scenic
and Recreational River, which largely parallels the highway, offers numerous
accesses for fishing and boating.
The Upper Delaware Scenic Byway provides a leisurely link between State Route 17 (the future 1-86) in Hancock and Interstate 84 in Port Jervis, traveling along beautiful State Route 97 and a section of U.S. Route 6.
This website navigates the Upper Delaware Scenic Byway by breaking the byway into five sections; the Southern Gateway, Lower section, Middle section, Upper section and the Northen Gateway. You may view each section by visiting the “Map Sections” portion of this website, where you will find overviews of each section of the Byway with a navigatable map. Within each of these sections you can learn more about the individual towns and hamlets along the Byway. Enjoy your visit.
